OSTP in Jakobstad is the market leader in stainless steel pipes and fittings, but also an industry frontrunner in sustainability. Not only are the company’s products in themselves extremely durable – with lifecycles of 60-100 years, depending on use – but it has systematically worked on sustainability for years. Today, 90% of the raw material OSTP uses is recycled steel, and of its finished products 100% are recyclable. OSTP aims to be carbon neutral by 2025.

“Sustainability is one of OSTP’s core values and it is a wide concept, encompassing environmental sustainability, but also our personnel’s health and safety, and the quality of our products”, says Kristina Laaksonen, Customer Care Center Manager.

OSTP is focusing on creating sustainable processes. One aspect of this is moving away from plastics in packaging; another is optimising transports. The company has also invested in heat recovery in its factory in Jakobstad, and it uses green energy in its production and biodiesel for its transports.

At OSTP, sustainability touches upon every aspect of the business and forms a true competitive advantage, say Kristina Laaksonen and Leena Kinaret.

Working with data is important for OSTP to calculate its carbon footprint, and for creating valuable digital tools that support sustainability.

“We have ambitious goals for renewing this traditional business of ours through data-driven decision making. By using data, our sustainability measures are based on verified facts, not just eloquent words. This is something that our customers require from us today and which will be required by the EU in the future. Leading with data is a clear competitive advantage for us”, explains Leena Kinaret, HR Manager.

Optimisation means finding what is productive from an economical and environmental standpoint, but also identifying the best use of resources. At OSTP, the most important resource is the company personnel. Here, focus is put on sustainable leadership and employeeship.

“We ask ourselves: what is best for our employees? How do we optimally apply their skills and knowledge, so that everyone can grow and find new opportunities? Our people have long careers with us, and sustainable leadership touches every point of those careers, in the big and the small things”, says Kinaret.
