Walki is building a sustainable future in the packaging industry
As the demand for innovative and sustainable packaging solutions is increasing, Walki is stepping up to the challenge. With a network of 16 plants worldwide, Walki’s plants in Vaasa and Jakobstad have roots going back to the 1960s. The company’s journey took an exciting turn in 2024 when it was acquired by Oji Holdings, a Japanese global leader in the pulp, paper, and packaging industry.
“Oji is a major player in Asia and Oceania, with a heritage of over 150 years. The acquisition was driven by their interest in learning how to operate more effectively in European markets. Rather than imposing their own practices, they have recognised the value of our operations”, says Frank Dahlbacka, Plant Director at Walki’s Pietarsaari plant.
Walki’s strength lies in the versatility of its plants. The Pietarsaari plant specialises in wrapping materials and barrier linings for industrial uses. In Vaasa, the focus is on food packaging, with decades of expertise in producing multi-layer films.

“We produce a wide range of films, mainly used in the food industry for consumer packaging. Our flexible films with a gas barrier or vacuum-sealed design ensure the freshness of food products”, says Stefan Söderlund, Plant Manager at Walki Flexipack in Vaasa.

Walki is investing heavily in the future of its operations, with modernisation projects underway at both the Pietarsaari and Vaasa plants. In addition to internal modernisation, Walki is actively contributing to broader sustainability initiatives in the region.
By 2030 all Walki products will be recyclable or compostable
“We are working in Pietarsaari on projects that explore how industrial by-products and waste streams can be recycled rather than being incinerated or sent to landfill”, says Dahlbacka.
Guided by its mission to transform materials for a circular future, Walki is committed to making all its products recyclable or compostable by 2030.
