As Finland’s fifth-largest general port and largest bulk port, the Port of Kokkola is more than just a vital logistics hub – it is a key enabler of the green transition. Its three port entities specialise in diverse cargo operations, ensuring a seamless flow of goods.

In the coming years, one of the Port of Kokkola’s largest projects is to expand its Silverstone Port from 15 to 42 hectares.

“All the biggest and heaviest components, such as wind turbine parts, are handled in Silverstone. In 2024, we managed the entire port logistics for Finland’s largest wind farm in Lestijärvi. By expanding Silverstone, we can also accommodate offshore wind turbine parts in the future”, states CEO Torbjörn Witting.

Additionally, the Port of Kokkola’s container handling has been fully moved to Silverstone. In early 2025, a new container gantry crane – one of the largest in Finland – was put into operation there.

“We have more than doubled our total container handling capacity per year.”

The largest of the three port entities is the 60-hectare Deep Port that has a 1.3-kilometre quay. Like the name suggests, this port has a deep-water route.

“The Deep Port’s fairway was deepened recently, and it now welcomes vessels with 14-metre drafts. The largest ships in Finland regularly call at this port”, says Witting.

Large quantities of onshore wind turbine parts are handled in the Silverstone Port – in the future, there will be space for bigger offshore parts as we

Heavy raw material flows for import and export from the Kokkola Industrial Park, as well as from Central and Northern Finland, are handled in the Deep Port. The port entity is still under development and can be enlarged to strengthen operations even further.

The General Port is the oldest of the port entities. In 2025, the Port of Kokkola turns 200 – operations started in 1825 in the General Port that has been heavily modernised.

“It is now, for instance, home to the only all-weather terminal in the Nordics. The General Port also has 40,000 m² of storage space. In total, there is 100,000 m² of covered warehouse space in the port entities.”

The green transition is constantly moving forward in the Kokkola region. On top of handling and storing wind turbine parts, the Port of Kokkola has an important role in the battery precursor material logistics.

“Many companies also plan to begin producing, for example, hydrogen or its derivatives – or both – in Kokkola, while even new heavy industry manufacturers are considering starting operations here. All these companies use renewable energy and need efficient logistics. We at the Port can confidently say that we are ready to respond to their needs”, says Witting.
