Many people are not aware of the fact that plastic is often the most environmentally friendly packaging choice. It is light, flexible, and offers the same features as other packaging options with significantly less material.

Rani Plast, producer of smart packaging solutions, believes plastic is the most sustainable choice for packaging material as it follows the principles of a circular economy. Twenty-five percent of the raw material used by Rani Plast is recycled, and the number is constantly increasing.

“We have, in fact, always reused our own production waste and, now, use recycled plastic from other industries too,” explains Rani Plast’s Sustainability and Development Director Mats Albäck.

Previously, recycled plastic was mainly used in products like waste bags but today it’s used in both industrial and agricultural films. Recycled raw materials cannot yet be used in direct contact with food, due to high hygiene demands.

Rani Plast recently made a big investment in a new regranulation facility to further support a circular economy. The facility, equipped with solar panels, will produce recycled raw material from Rani Plast’s production spill and its customers’ plastic waste.

Rani Plast’s vision is to create a circular economy where the company’s products are returned to the factory after use.

“Our future vision is to create closed loops, where the products we produce are returned to our factory after use. All our films are 100% recyclable and it is fundamental to make the recycling process as effective as possible,” says Albäck.

Rani Plast is actively working with national and international recycling institutions to increase the availability of recycled raw materials. Recently, the company also initiated a recycling project with its raw material suppliers to identify new streams of high-quality recycled plastic.

Rani Plast is a family-owned company, and Mats Albäck is grateful for its dedicated employees.

“Some people have been with the company for decades. Together with our employees, customers, and partners, we can make the circular economy a reality,” he concludes.
