ACCORDING TO Citec CEO Johan Westermarck, the world has changed quite a bit during the last ten years in the engineering business. “Earlier, you could predict the future two years ahead. Nowadays, we talk about months.”

This increasing volatility is a challenge for many companies – how to allocate resources when everything is unpredictable? Engineering consultant Citec offers a solution by being a flexible partner who swiftly can be of help when additional engineering resources are needed.

“With half of our employees in India, we can efficiently answer to customer needs. All in all, we have 1,000 employees, which makes us a big enough organisation to even out the workload internally.”

CITEC HAS recently sharpened its offering and is now focusing on four main fields; plant engineering, product engineering, technical documentation and digital solutions. While traditional plant engineering still plays an important role, different digital solutions are a new area with unprecedented opportunities.

“We are currently investing heavily in thisfield. It is fair to say that we are in the forefront when it comes to digitalisation in the engineering industry.” One digital solution that has been in use for a couple of years already is Robotic Process Automation (RPA), i.e. a robot software that handles highvolume, repeatable tasks that previously had to be performed by a human.

ANOTHER DIGITAL SERVICE, which is still in its early days, is a so-called digital twin – a digital copy of a power plant or other factory, that users can visit by wearing virtual reality glasses.

“Through this service, customers can visit a power plant even before it has been built. Later, the digital twin can be used throughout the plant’s lifecycle, for functions such as training and managing spare parts. In addition, through mathematical models and IoT, the system can give alerts if something at the plant doesn’t function normally.”

Westermarck has high hopes for the new business area of digital services.“I’m convinced that this will take us to the next level in our growth plans.”
