VASEK is helping businesses attract and retain a workforce for the future
As the demand for skilled labour increases, the Vaasa Region Development Company (VASEK) is guiding local businesses of all sizes, from solo entrepreneurs and start-ups to global enterprises.
“Our work consists of business advisory services, regional development, and communications. Our mission is to enhance companies’ operational capacity and to foster dialogue with local businesses about future challenges and opportunities”, says Tuija Räihä-Pundars, Business Advisor at VASEK.
One of VASEK’s initiatives, the Attractive Vaasa Region project, targets higher education graduates all over Finland, aiming to bring them to the Vaasa region. Simultaneously, efforts to integrate current university students in Vaasa into the local workforce are being continued.
“We connect students with companies, expanding their awareness of potential career paths here”, explains Maria Haglund, Project Manager, skilled workforce. With major investments on the horizon, attracting young talent early is essential for securing a committed workforce for the long term.
“Companies can find real gems among first- and second-year students. By hiring early, businesses can develop a student’s skills over the course of their studies, resulting in a graduate who is familiar with the company’s needs. With established connections, graduates are far more likely to stay in the region”, notes Räihä-Pundars.
VASEK is also raising awareness among local businesses about the direction of workforce development and the increasing need for international employees.
“Some companies have already announced that English will be their working language at every level, which opens doors for a wider pool of talent. A diverse workforce can introduce fresh insights and ideas that can challenge outdated practices within companies. To keep businesses informed, we highlight the numerous organisations that advocate for international talents. Ultimately, it’s our shared responsibility to keep these skilled individuals here before they seek opportunities elsewhere,” Haglund emphasises.
