When Daniel Sundqvist took over as CEO of Sundström in December 2023, he embraced the challenges of the fast-paced infrastructure sector while upholding the values of a family-owned company. His first year at Sundström has been marked by strategic growth, ambitious projects, and a continued focus on sustainability.

“The industry is like a moving train – it doesn’t stop just because you’re new on board. You have to make decisions quickly. But the support from colleagues has made it easier to integrate and move forward”, Sundqvist says.

Leveraging his experience in industrial project management, Sundqvist has enhanced Sundström’s ability to take on technically demanding projects. In the summer of 2024, Sundström took on the largest asphalt paving project of the season, a 70-kilometre stretch of road in Utsjoki, the northernmost municipality in both Finland and the European Union. Despite the logistical complexities, the company delivered the project ahead of schedule. Sundström’s expertise is also evident in the tunnel project in Perniö, the freight yard in Turku and Stora Enso’s billion-euro investment in Oulu.

“The Stora Enso project was a one-and-a-half-year journey involving land and foundation construction, and the development of a six-hectare timber storage area with a railway connection”, Sundqvist explains.

Sundström’s expertise was on full display in Utsjoki, Finland’s northernmost municipality, where the company completed a 70-kilometre asphalt paving project ahead of schedule.

Instead of relying solely on new raw materials, the company reuses aggregates and other materials directly from its work sites.

“In railway projects, we reuse high-grade aggregates from old tracks as substructure material for new ones. Reusing materials is a win-win for everyone – for us, for the client, and the environment”, says Sundqvist.

Sundström’s success is built by the dedication of its employees. From engineers to project managers and on-site crews, every team member plays a role in ensuring smooth project delivery for public, industrial, and private clients alike.

“Our people are the reason we can meet these challenging schedules. Their commitment, flexibility, and willingness to go the extra mile are what make it possible.”
