Baltic Yachts makes sailing even greener
BALTIC YACHTS has established itself as the world’s leading builder of large, advanced composite sailing yachts. The company is renowned for its high-quality engineering and innovative approach towards the custom-built vessels it creates for a discerning, high wealth client base.In its 46-year history, Baltic Yachts has developed a highly skilled local workforce based in Jakobstad and Bosund.
“The company began by building a range of smaller production boats and evolved into the world of superyachts as technology accelerated and demand for large yachts grew”, says Anders Kurtén, CEO.
Today, the company builds two or three large yachts annually, most of which are well over 30 metres in length. Each one is a bespoke example of leading-edge technology and innovation. Baltic Yachts is always looking at ways to reduce the carbon footprint of their yachts, while making them ever more efficient and comfortable.
THEIR LATEST launch is the impressive, groundbreaking Baltic 142 Canova, a single mast sailing yacht designed to take her owner and guestsaround the world at speed and in great comfort. Sailing yachts of this type usually have a diesel engine as an auxiliary means of propulsion, but Canova is fitted with a powerful emission-free electric motor instead; the propeller also acts as a turbine to produce electricity when the yacht is sailing.
In addition, Canova is fitted with a sliding hydrofoil in its hull which, when deployed like a wing in the water, has the effect of reducing heel, increasing speed and, importantly, reducing overall motion to make the yacht much more comfortable.

BALTIC YACHTS has built its reputation on the use of advanced composites, which now includes the growing use of sustainable materials like flax. This and other natural materials are now being used in the construction process, thus significantly reducing the carbon footprint of what the company manufactures.
