Optima has a clear mission: to strengthen the region’s vitality. The Jakobstad-based vocational education provider has tailored its services to cater to students and local businesses. While Optima focuses on state-funded education in several fields, its subsidiary, Optima Plus, offers courses for professional development, including occupational safety, first aid training, and hygiene proficiency.

“We aim to be a strong partner in ensuring the availability of skilled labour in the Jakobstad region. Our focus is on building partnerships that help young people find clear pathways into the workforce. Through Optima Plus, we provide specialised training for those already in the workforce,” says Director Max Gripenberg.

Collaboration with companies is a core part of Optima’s daily operations. The institution connects students with local businesses and helps them find clear career paths. Students gain hands-on experience through internships and apprenticeships, and staff maintain strong relationships with local businesses. In addition, Optima offers continuous applications for available spots and adjusts its programmes by increasing student places in high-demand fields.

“We are expanding our electrical engineering programme in response to the growing demand. By increasing student intake in this field, we ensure that the region has access to the skilled workforce needed for future growth”, Gripenberg says.

We build partnerships that help young people find pathways into the workforce

Sustainability is a key factor for the future of work and business, influencing not only how companies operate but also how they attract and retain talent. To address this, Optima is participating in national and international projects aimed at promoting circular economy and sustainable practices.

“Sustainability is more important than ever, and this is something our students and staff fully understand. In the future, competition for skilled talent will become even tougher, making it essential for companies to be attractive employers”, Gripenberg notes.
