Some of the world's largest and finest sailing yachts are built in Ostrobothnia. Courage combined with ancient boat building traditions have created a unique cluster of know-how along the region’s coast.

The people living on the coast of Ostrobothnia have always been fascinated by the oceans of the world. Many centuries ago large wooden fishing and cargo vessels were already being built here. Boat building skills have been passed on from generation to generation, and today the region is home to a unique boat industry cluster.

Builders of different kinds of boats can be found all along a stretch of the Ostrobothnian coast from Kokkola and Jakobstad in the north to Malax in the south. They make power craft ranging from smaller dayboats all the way to cruisers up to 15 metres long. The region’s boat building cluster’s most special products, however, are its custom-made and semi-custom luxury sailing yachts.
“It shows great courage to start building vessels for which there is no local demand at all,” says the former CEO of the Ostrobothnia Chamber of Commerce Bengt Jansson, who has followed the development of the local boat building cluster up close since the 1980s. The yachts built in this region are often some of the largest in the world, containing state-of-the-art technology and made to the highest specifications.

Quality is the one strong characteristic most clearly shared by the boat builders along the Ostrobothnian coast. Top quality begins with the design and extremely accurate measurements and calculations, which are necessary especially for yachts that, in some cases, are almost 200 feet long and have masts reaching roughly as high. Every detail and part of a vessel must be built to extremely high standards.

“In the wake of boat building companies, many subcontractors have sprung up that manufacture, for example, padding, cushions, hatches and other parts for vessels,” Jansson explains. In addition to quality, he sees project know-how as the absolute top competence of the region’s boat building cluster.

“A large bespoke yacht requires years of planning and design and years to build. This requires an immense amount of know-how from many different fields. It takes hundreds of skilful people to make a luxury yacht, and so their project know-how must be the best in the world.”
